• used to help alleviate the pain associated with rheumatism
• used to treat skin disorders such as eczema and psoriasis
• used as a diuretic and blood purifier
A blood purifier and diuretic, burdock root has a long and distinguished history of use in traditional Western medicine as a remedy for skin diseases and rheumatic ailments.
Burdock is a valuable remedy for the treatment of skin conditions that result in dry and scaly patches. It may be most effective for psoriasis if used over a long period of time. It has value when used as part of a wider treatment program for rheumatic complaints, especially when associated with psoriasis. In general, burdock will move the body to a state of integration and health, improving indicators of systemic imbalance, such as skin conditions and dandruff.
Naturopath William Mitchell refers to the value of this herb in treating eczema and psoriasis, pointing out that burdock root “contains lignans, polyacetylenes, and various organic acids such as acetic and isovaleric acids. These organic acids stimulate the immune and detoxifying systems of the body.”
Burdock has an abundance of minerals, especially iron, that makes it especially valuable for the blood.
Yet another research study suggests that burdock root is significantly anti-inflammatory and that it has free radical scavenging properties.

A NOTE ON TINCTURES
Tinctures are more readily absorbed by the body and have a high degree of bio-availability. As well, they have a long shelf life.
Sometimes people ask us why tinctures are alcohol-based. There are very good reasons. Alcohol is critically important in the extraction of an herb's medicinal ingredients. It also helps to stabilize and preserve them. Alcohol is the ideal carrier substance, conveying the therapeutic goodness of the herb to the body. In itself, too, science has proven that alcohol enhances the immune system and its defences.
As for the amount of alcohol taken in an average dose of tincture, you'll be surprised to learn that it's about the same as what you'd find in an overly ripe banana!
Tinctures remain the most practical way to take advantage of the amazing, health-giving power of herbs.
